| Pittsburgh International Children's Theater opens the door for children to experience professional performing arts. Our vision is to present and promote professional programming for children which inspires, challenges, educates, and stimulate respect for and understanding of all cultures in an entertaining and enlightening way. The organization provides diverse programming which introduces young people to other ways of viewing the world around them. 1969 |
Incorporated as Performing Arts For Children, a not-for-profit organization to introduce children to the magic of live performances. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1970 |
The first Family Series opens in the fall with "Mister Rogers' Neighbors" and continues for ten years in the South Hills. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1980 |
Heinz Hall becomes the site for the Family Series' season-opening performance. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1983 |
The Family Series expands to the east suburbs and over the next ten years expands to the west and north suburbs as well as the Byham Theater in Pittsburgh's Cultural District. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1985 |
Performing Arts For Children and CitiParks incorporate the Pittsburgh International Children's Festival as a not-for-profit organization to co-present an international arts festival in Pittsburgh. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The first Festival debuts to rave reviews with indoor theater performances from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden, and the United States. Outdoor stages as well as recreational, educational and cultural activities are located throughout the grounds. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1990 |
Local and regional artists are commissioned to created new productions, including "The Mighty Casey," performed by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater at the Benedum Center. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Performing Arts For Children hosts the 14th International Showcase Of Performing Arts For Young People at Heinz Hall, attracting over 500 presenters and exhibitors from Canada, Europe, and the United States. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1995 |
The Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary and welcomes its one millionth visitor. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Performing Arts For Children and the Pittsburgh Children's Festival merge to create the Pittsburgh International Children's Theater, combining operations and expanding resources to present world-class performing arts for the region's children. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Junior League Of Pittsburgh, Inc. and Pittsburgh International Children's Theater begin a three-year outreach program, "Theatricality," to introduce pre-school children to theater. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2003 |
Pittsburgh International Children's Theater extends the reach of the Festival with the first off-site Festival show at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2004 |
Pittsburgh International Children's Theater adds the first new Family Series venue in over 10 years with a show at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty. The organization also offers its first school-day performance to a sold-out audience of over 1,500 at Carnegie Music Hall. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
2008 |
After 21 years at Northside's West Park, the 2008 International Children's Festival is presented in a new location in the Oakland neighborhood on the grounds/facilities of the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Library and Schenley Plaza. Pittsburgh International Children's Theater merges with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. |
